The chicks are getting bigger. I’m starting to think about how to put this thing together.
i wasn;t intending on doing it quite this large, but it would be nice to park my tractor out of the rain. The shed is full of pool stuff and
3 kids worth
of bikes and yard toys.

Why does the chicken coop have two doors?
Because if it had four doors, it would be a chicken sedan!

How do you plan to mitigate the risk of the chickens appropriating the conveniently placed tractor for their insurrection?

Chicken Coop design is probably the only situation where SketchUp is an appropriate software.

I was more worried about someone touching a tractor they nest above and shit besides.

I’ve done entire sets of house plans on SketchUp.

I'm thinking I'll just push it under. It's not easy but it will be better for the tractor.

Now where ’s the fun in that? Do it at full throttle or go home.
Still, a t least pushing it you’re not going to do any damage i f you forget to drop the rollhoop. I’ve made that mistake once already on mine: it fails to clear the door by about 2". Fortunately the door survived.

That’s.... elaborate. I’ve built three chook houses over the last 15 years. They don’t need a big enclosed roost area and all they need for egg laying is a lawn mower catcher (our currently use a defunct chainsaw carry case). And they don’t need (and you don’t want) a big ramp...just a small l adder is fine. Something you can get out of the way to clean up. Speaking of which....the door should be big enough to fit a wheelbarrow. Preferably...bigger.

That’s just like ours! Cept I built a house for the duck where you’re planning to park a ride on.

Looks pretty good to me, but I’m not a chicken coop expert.

In all honestly it’s pretty good if you use it for architecture, but for anything else it’s a compromised experience. I will say, after a year of using it professionally it has grown on me. I still use it as my go to software if it’s something simple enough that I wouldn’t be out too much time if I had to start over from scratch to make a change.
It’s just not good for fine details. No fillet or chamfer option in 2020 (I’m aware of the plugins but they have caused the program to crash and it almost never works correctly ) is disappointing. It’s also not great for models that will have changes done to them. Also the lack of actual polylines really puts any curvy form s off limits, unless you really want to spend some time on it. These things aren’t SketchUp’s fault, they’re only issues to me because I know other software can do these things easily.
Only reason I don’t like it is because for a few months it was the only software my company had and it wasn’t a good one for what we were doing. I will say that Layout is a pretty good drawing software, takes a lot of basic Adobe Illustrator tools and combines them with the ability to scale and dimension 3d data.
TL;DR SketchUp is fine, I just resent it because I had to use it for non architectural product development.

The blue thing isn't for the chickens. Just the white thing. It's about 3sqft per bird. The run is about 10 sqft per bird. I'll have to look into the ramp more

I understand that...by elaborate, I probably meant...fancy or even complicated?
This is our current chook yard. There’s perhaps 30 square metres of space in there for six birds but they sp end little time in it as they free range around the block most of the day...

It’s excellent for visualizations , we use it to show surveillance camera placements and what will be covered/not.
It’s also a decent 3d design tool for printable objects.

yea, i could see it not being great for a lot of other stuff. anything with a curve can get frustrating, also stuff like ground contou r lines.
